Bay House by LSS

Bay House, a wooden house design which is located in Long Island, New York, USA is designed by Leroy Street Studio (LSS) Architects. This wooden house design was completedn in 2009 and built on 5,570 sqft.

Bay House takes complicated site constraints as an idea to create a dynamic space with beautiful views of the bay. The location of this house is on a barrier island, which have characteristic as a wetlands and full of lawn and bulkheads. The architects started this project from the reclamation of the site and bringing grasses and native vegetation. Because of the site’s characters, Bay House need to build on the piles. These piles support a house floor and surrounding decks, including a narrow boardwalk.

Main living room of this house is designed with the large expantion of alumunium curtain wall and allow it to open onto the surrounding wooden deck. This technique give a larger shared public space. Walls shelter this family space from the close proximity of the neighbors. Storage elements and built-in furniture, including a desk and wine-storage wall, are built into the perimeter walls to add to the feeling of enclosure. Small windows are punched through the protective veil to frame intimate views. At the client’s request the dining room was located closest to the water and oriented toward the sunset. The angled forms allow spaces to capture views up and down the bay.

Australian Beach House – Curl Curl by CplusC Architects

Located in the Northern Beaches of Sydney, CplusC Architects have designed a beach house project namely Curl Curl beach house, taken from beach name, Curl Curl, New South Wales, Australia. Curl Curl beach house has stunning result by exploiting the structural and aesthetic benefits of wooden material, which is common used in beach house.

This Australian beach house was a project combination among materials, time and cost-effectiveness. Overview of a particular project consist of two bedroom with built in robes, bathroom/laundry room, open dining room, kitchen, lounge and a bridges.

The building envelope was influenced by sharing driveway, a service easement and a compact site and ease the architects to maximize internal floor area as good as external amenity. Natural ventilation in all direction of this Australian beach house were provided to respond to climate change through year. Another smart way which taken by the architects were providing integral fish ponds and plant beach vegetation that cool the summer breeze.

The public space in the East is separated by a central structural zone from the private space in the west side. The integration corridors that link the public and private spaces was constructed using wood studwork and clad with Spruce veneer. This connenction also accomodates the service and storage requirments of this Australian beach house.

The longitudinal partition of the beach house was reflected with the metal clad butterfly roof as a rainwater collector, which is stored in the basement for the entire system of the bladder.

From the outside, walls framed with Western Red Cedar shiplap boards are colored in black and lined vertically aligned. This creates a bold, modest aesthetic which contrasts with the clear oiled Western Red Cedar doors and windows, used specifically in this application due to its light weight and durability.

The essential elements of the interior was clean sinuous skylights along the entire length of the wall of the building and outside light. The shadow cast from the exposed LVL beams provide rhythm and interest.

Floating House in Canada by MOS Architects

Somethings wonderful from the nature always give alot of inspiration to the people. No exception in the architectural field, nature always inspire architects to create wonderful house in sinergy with surrounding conditions. For the example, Lake Huron in Ontario, Canada already inspired MOS Architects to designed The Floating House.

The Floating House by MOS Architects is a wood building which sited on floaters in the center of the Lake Huron. The used of wood material is proposed for the house easily float on the lake, because of its light weight. The MOS Architects had calculated detail the effect of the season which is directly effect to the level of water in the Lake Huron. A simple looks architecture but needs accurate calculation especially for the floater construction.

Lake Huron in Ontario, Canada offers great panoramic views. The natural stones which present there are valuable assets for this floating house. MOS Architects utilized this assets to give full support for its floating house design. A deck was connecting this floating house to the natural stones and give space to the people enjoy surounding views. This connection also has another function to flexibility hold the floating house.

The interior concept of this floating house were not complicated. MOS Architects made simple partition to create rooms space of this house. The private spaces were placed in the second floor, where we can enjoy the Lake Huron from every direction. The floor used wood material with natural color and texture. Floating House Interior dominated by white color and natural color of wood which could give clean atmosphere inside the house.

The Narrabeen house is situated on the shores of Narrabeen lagoon which has views across the water to an island crowded with Casuarinas. The house is new and replaces a brick house with 70′s style before which fuctioned poorly and like other houses in that era, did not care about the environmental quality of Narrabeen lagoon which is very unique.

When involved in this project, we obviously want to restore the connection among the house , the lagoon and also the island, but we are also faced with poor road conditions which is very contrast with the existing property.

This leads us to think about the project within the framework of ‘ideal suburb’ – a framework that allows a house to have a street address like any other suburban house, while secretly pursuing an ideal oasis and retreat in which water experience can be used to maximize the impact – in effect, strengthen the current contrast between the streets and the lagoon.

From the street, the composition of the house was built around the driveway, entrance and garage as a typical suburban house, but the impact of domestic elements propagated by their fusion into the expression and form of single architecture. Extensive facade combined with with a detail floating building gives horizontal proportions on the house and even though the dark timber cladding gives the building a ‘stealth’ like appearance, it still withholds the drama of the lagoon beyond.

This sets up two key planning strategies.

First, the central courtyard was introduced as a major element of planning to organize with all the major public spaces in the house – living room, dining room, kitchen, study and ponds – are grouped around a courtyard to connect the spaces visually and physically when the wall of the courtyard is opened. The arrangement promotes a socially inclusive dynamic as well as extending the spatial opportunities of the house. This courtyard also has a significant environmental role to bring the sun, light and air into the middle of the house.

Second, the plan deliberately to isolate its occupants from suburban surrounds to increase the sense of oasis and privacy. This process begins on the streets taking the visitors through a succession of exterior space that is gradually suppressed and remove the context of the street through the composition of the fence, full height screen and threshold. The entry sequences eventually ended in a solid door in which a sense of intrigue peak. Rather than get into the hall, one arrives at the courtyard where entirely from private domains, lagoons and islands are revealed and a sense of the outside world is removed.

This house also has an unusual cross-section arrangement driven partly by the need to lift the interior 1.2m above ground level to protect against flooding, but also by a desire to have an open space with dual aspect – north for the sun and south for the wonderful view.

This raises concerns about home-scale relations with its neighbors, allowing a more attractive multilevel relationship between interior and exterior living space to occur. The combination of interaction with the sectional layout of space in relation to the courtyard is what enables the layering of spaces to occur – it is possible to view the courtyard, living room, deck next to the lagoon, lagoons and islands as backdrop in just one vista from the study.

Flood raising 1200mm helps by introducing level changes that step and advantage the deeper views Porosity radically increases experience of exterior framed views, elevated The vistas from the key living areas and courtyard are composed to heighten the sense of connection with the lagoon and place the island as the key visual terminating feature.

The materiality further develops the notion of oasis with a simple calming palette of warm natural materials that have a beneficial environmental effect while connecting the house with the natural environment of the lagoon and island.

Two Storey Home by Wessels Joyce Associates

Two storey home which is very big is designed by Wessels Joyce Associates. They built this luxury house in Knysna, South Africa. A beach house concept was brought by the architects in this project and the result is very stunning two storey house.

Like usual beach house, this house is dominate by glass wall in every part. The owner can capture the amazing surrounding view from inside of the house even from their private bedroom. In front of this house, we can find large size of swimming pool complete with its wooden deck.

If we see this house from outside, this house is look like built on wooden stage. The architects made the level of this house higher from the surrounding to maximize surrounding support. Unfortunately, this two storey house looks so monotonous, we just only see a house on another house, not so much variation.

Casa De La Flora is a beach resort with fantastic beach view located in Khao Lak, Thailand. This resort is surrounded by Khoalak’s pristine and designed by VaSLab Architecture. Now this beach resort are open for public, the soft opening itself started in March 1st, 2011.

The architecture style used in this Casa De La Flora beach resort is minimalist, where we can find box space in every unit of this resort. The combination between wood and concrete become more attractive with soft natural and soft color. The room which face up to the beach view will serve unforgettable moment for every people who stay there. We can enjoy the sun set while swimming in the pool in front of this Casa De La Flora beach resort.

For interior detail, we can find large bedroom with king size spring bed. The ceiling is made from wood with natural color. The architects placed the bedroom face up to the beach and giant window provided to give access to the people enjoy sun set from the bedroom. This beach resort also completed with living room where we can enjoy our time with our family or our partner. The design is quite simple but very artistic with one long chair in front of a television. For the bathroom, the designer make a small whirlpool where we can release our stress by bathing there.

And an architecture firm which has two offices in Melbourne and Sydney, Bates Smart Architects has designed a beach house the Salvado Street Residence in Perth, Australia. This residence is for retired couple and located in Cottesloe, Western Australia. So this beach house design is made for a compact and low maintenance residence. Inspired by a beach house, the Salvado Street Residence is a modernist house with a clear and rational design. Some adjustment is implemented for full fill the needs of the owner.

Bates Smart Architects’s Description:
The design draws inspiration from modernist ideals of living which are tempered by a critical regionalist response to climate and place. Minimal lines and planar forms reference its modernist inspiration whilst materiality and detailing draw from a local palette of materials.

The planning concept is based on a courtyard typology featuring a pond, around which the private spaces and the public entertainment spaces are organized. This duality is emphasized architecturally by separate treatments of the private and public spaces: the public spaces are open plan, outward-oriented and unenclosed spaces gathered under a floating Miesian roof whilst the private spaces are inwardly focused and enclosed within thick masonry walls which create a sense of privacy and retreat.

The Salvado Street Residence, drawing simultaneously on the spatial qualities of the International Style and the regional context of coastal Western Australia, reveals a unique take of contemporary Australian Architecture.

North Bay Residence has been designed by Prentiss Architects. This house is located in Washington State, USA. The architects plays combination between natural stone, steel frame, wood and glasses for all part of this house. North bay residence adopt classic and modern style, in my opinion. Classic due to the use of natural stone as their wall and floor. Modern can be seen from large glass window and the arrangement of the interior side. This project is quite amazing not only from the architecture but also from surrounding natural view.
