Rooftop Garden Idea

The existence of a rooftop garden will lead to burden increasing. Heap of soil and plants will add dead load, wind load, and additional water load on the roof of the building. The building must have a drainage system that works well.

If the type of plant to be planted is shrubs, the roof load will increase about 650 kg/m2. In addition to live load according to activity on the rooftop garden. For example, 400 kg/m2 for sports, 500 kg/m2 to party and dance, and 250 kg/m2 for restaurants.

To plant a big tree on a rooftop garden, the floor slab of the location must be supported by structural column to prevent concrete slab collapse. For the planting medium, the formula should be light but has the ability to provide nutrients and moisture. For example, by mixing sand with wood shavings plus a layer of pine bark and manure. The depth of planting medium for grass requires 20 to 30 centimeters, as well as cover crops. Meanwhile, shrubs and small trees require a depth of 60-105 centimeters. A large tree to a depth of nearly 2 meters.

Rooftop Garden for reducing global warming

By creating a garden on the roof, skyscraper buildings can still have a green open space, because there is space efficiency. Rooftop garden is as an alternative reforestation to improve the quality of big city environmental health. Currently, only some five-star hotel in a big city which has a rooftop garden.

Making a garden on the roof is not cheap and need structure and specific roof construction. Even for optimal results, the construction of the roof for garden was designed from the beginning, before the building was constructed. However, this investment can come back in a few years later, because the cost of electricity for air conditioning is reduced, and add building economic value.

A private hospital in Singapore succeeded in reducing electricity consumption by 50 percent, after making a Rooftop Garden. Although the Rooftop Garden is just a tomato plant, which is placed in the pot to cover the entire roof. Another advantage, the hospital did not have to buy tomatoes anymore.

In addition to the shade, the Rooftop Garden can also be used to absorb toxic gases. For example, bamboo or palm can absorb formaldehyde gas and gasoline. Thus our strategy was to build a solid wall to each side neighbor to provide privacy where possible, while creating a central light and stair well which would funnel the sea breeze through the centre of the building. The front and rear of the building meanwhile, terrace back allowing each storey to have visual or actual access to greenery.

The intention was to try to allow each roof garden provided a base for the storey above allowing the layered effect to make each storey feel like it was a single storey dwelling sitting in a garden…..as much as we could do in the close confines of sentosa island and with such a large building!

Description from the architect:
The house is built between two narrow streets in the old part of the town of Lemesos, about 50m from one of the most popular stretches of sandy beach in Cyprus, and just down the road from the house I grew up. The site was previously occupied by an old carob mill that burnt down in a fire in 1989, leaving only the ruins of the stone walls.

The aim was to create a family home for me, my wife, and our four boys. For convenience and privacy, we wanted our place of work to be within the same plot but to have a separate entrance. The building had to fit into it’s surrounding environment of both traditional two storey stone and adobe single family dwellings, and some small old industrial buildings. At the same time it had to be modern, learning from traditional architecture but not copying it. Towards my aim of creating a coherent and safe environment for my family, I drew ideas from my own childhood memories of playing under huge plane trees in a house next to a mountain stream.

Last but not least, I wanted to apply ecological solutions to heating, cooling, lighting and water management.Most rooms in the house face the partly covered internal courtyard. This is a traditional way of building in Cyprus helping to keep the family together and safeguard the privacy of the occupants. A neoclassical proportional system that relates to human scale, is applied to both interior and exterior surfaces and can be seen in plan, elevation and section. (source:contemporist)

Busca Vida House was phenomenal project from Andre Luque in 2007. Located in Camaçari, northern coast of Bahia, Brazil, this house was built to connect with the surroundings environment. Mainly the existing vegetation was preserved by the owner and architect as a part of this project. Only one small tree was removed from the site. The house was utilizing natural ventilation and sun light through large glass panels.

To fulfill the owner’s desire to receive friends, and at the same time not to have her privacy disturbed, the house was divided into two separate pavilions. The first pavilion, designed exclusively for the owner, has a suite, living room and dining room, a small kitchen, a pantry, storage and service area. The second one has three suites to receive friends. The interconnection between the two happens through a covered social area with common usage, which was installed in an inviting gourmet kitchen. Aligned to the first pavilion, are located the deck and pool area allowing the expansion and integration of the internal area, summing up to 445m2 of built area. (source : Archdaily)

One way to enhance the beauty of a house is by attending a garden at our courtyard. House becomes barren and gives the shady impression. Especially when the summer arrives. For this reason Lutsko Associates create a garden on an urban residential in San Fransisco. The concept of this project is outdoor architecture for everyday living, maximizes the impact and experience of a small space. The sunlight can breakthrough this garden easily because of no roofs on this garden. Other advantage is we can enjoy the garden from second levels balcony instead of from the inside of the house. The design pays careful attention to the sensory experience of materials and planting, which contribute to the richness and beauty of the garden.

Description :
This urban garden in the Pacific Heights district of San Francisco surrounds a single-family home. The house was designed in 1990 by the noted Bay Area architectural firm EHDD under the tutelage of the late Joe Esherick. When viewed from the home’s two balconies overlooking the site, the garden is a graphic composition of space, materials and planting. From this perspective the distant San Francisco Bay and Alcatraz Island slip into the view of the city spread out below the property. The garden is designed to carry the sense of the city’s urban fabric into the site. From within, the garden is intimately experienced as a sequence of outdoor rooms, their spaces and design features sequentially concealed and revealed as one passes through each threshold in the composition.

The garden is divided into a series of three enclosed garden rooms, each rigorously defined by architectural and/or planted edges. The variety of edge treatments—translucent glass, hand-troweled plaster, a curved bronze wall, and planting—explore the relationship between viewer and the adjacent off-site conditions. The walls between rooms are composed of clipped Prunus caroliniana hedges, fit within the structure of steel frames. Thresholds between the spaces create a sense of mystery and discovery as one moves through the garden.

Each room is distinct in form and quality. The first room, in need of light and privacy, is defined by translucent glass that emits light and reveals subtle forms from beyond the garden’s edge. This edge is reinforced with billowing Pelargonium tomentosum and Salvia cacaliifolia to bring a sense of nature and fragrance into the otherwise constructed space. The sculptural forms of multi-branched Osmanthus fragrans against a clean plaster wall terminate the view end of this space. The second room is dominated by the most dramatic element of the garden, a large curving wall made of bronze. From a slot in the wall, water cascades into a basin cut into the paving beneath. Placed against an adjacent building wall, the water feature creates a sensual edge to the quiet, introspective space. In the third room, the visitor gets a surprise vista of the city, the bay, and the Trans-America Building through an open window like panel in a translucent wall. The wall’s reeded glass panels layered over the neighbor’s Beaux-Arts balustrade acknowledges the pastiche of the city, and is a reference to changing styles of architecture over time. A lemon tree, espaliered against a plaster wall, aligns with the garden’s axial view.

The garden employs large swaths of contrasting materials to create a bold graphic composition: light limestone paving which glows in the San Francisco fog is punctuated with bands of woolly thyme; dark granite stone is etched with pallid spirals to evoke a mosaic. The planting palette is restrained; shades of green and Grey with white flowers give precedence to form over color. Bold textured foliage contrasts dramatically with the materiality of the space. The combination of material selection and structural composition respond to the simple, distilled forms of the house. The garden becomes a literal extension of the house for everyday living while still relating to its adjacent urban form.

This house design project is come from idea to combined concrete house with soft component such as natural garden. Built on location near a lake, A-Cero Architects make this house looks so fantastic. Especially supported by green extensions that spread over the common areas of the estate. The verandas and the pergolas, elements as volumetric as the housing, give personality to the facade. The covering as such disappears turning into a flat roof as expression of the evolution of the creative process. The forms purity moves to the constructive scheme, to the materials and to the environment impelling the union between the building and the context where it is located.

As you begin designing your garden pond, choose a area that will not be subject to too many falling leaves which will rot in the pond. Depending on the size of your block you may choose a location at the end of a winding path to draw people through the garden to the sound of running water from a waterfall. In a more urban area you may choose a location close to the house so that you can hear the sounds of the pond from inside the house.

There are other benefits in addition to the calming effects that your garden pond design will provide; the wonders of nature may also become available to you. A well-designed garden pond will not only provide an oasis for the human members of the family, animals may also enjoy it. You shouldn’t be surprised if your new pond attracts song birds, frogs, turtles and other water-loving creatures. You can also consider adding fish to a pond. Fish in the colors of gold, yellow, black and white will provide a stunning contrast to the various greens of the aquatic plants and the darker water of the pond.

The owner wanted a beautiful garden as a part of their house, and become a reason why they decided to move from their duplex apartment in central Stockholm to this country side location at lake Mälaren. To full fill customer requirement we proposed a house conceived as an integrated vertical addition to the garden, where indoor and outdoor spaces gradually blend and interact.

The triangular foot print is the result of a steep slope that diagonally crosses the site. With one of the long facades facing south we also managed to eliminate a pure northern façade. This further helped the idea of plants climbing high on the oversize trellis that cover some of the windows so that in time they will become hidden within the greenery.

A double height winter garden also function as a natural pre-heating of fresh air. The roof terrace offers very long views over the nearby hills towards lake Mälaren. Construction is all wood, both structure and finishes.

Courtyard garden is one of simple garden type that only needs small area of our house, usually we place it in front of a house, on the left or right side of the house, or even in the center of the house. Simple and no need a lot of time to maintain it. But we have participated on global warming preventing program, beside decorating our house.

The dining table, made by Gabor from old wooden fencing planks, does double duty for working lunches and family gatherings.

Bold clumps of Colocasia esculenta ‘Fontanesii’ (black taro) help divide the small garden into separate spaces.

In the outdoor living room, Gabor + Allen’s distinctive fire table made from natural stone emerges from a groundcover of Sedum anglicum

In the front garden (which used to be a lawn), curvilinear planting beds frame the perimeter of the permeable hardscaped patio with a bright palette of lime green, yellows and oranges. The chairs were a Santa Monica Airport flea market find, reupholstered with new coral Sunbrella fabric cushions. Plants include Acorus gramineus ‘Ogon’ (Japanese sweet flag), Agave desmetiana and Farfugium japonicum ‘Aureomaculatum’ (leopard plant).
