Winter Residence Redesign by Ibarra Rosano Design Architects

The new Winter residence is redesign project done by Ibarra Rosano Design Architects, which aims to transform a contemporary 1940′s house in Tucson, Arizona. Actually, the basic idea of this redesign house project start from the owner desire to renovate its bathroom. They want to change their bathroom to be similar or may be better from what they had looked in the hotel where they stayed during their vacation. After evaluate all model aspect, the owner agreed to renovate all part of this house, because it’s looked quite strange when we found minimalist bathroom in 1940′s house model.

Ibarra Rosano Design Architects focus on the space in this remodeling project. Original 1940′s house had poor form space and high energy consumed. The architects always look for the way to the best transformation with minimalist strokes – a design Haiku. The approach was one of simplification and amplification. Natural light rejuvenates the spaces, eliciting the harmony and serenity analogous to a cloud’s interior. An abstract desert cloud resting quietly on a hill was a metaphor for the project.

Although we briefly contemplated a tear-down, in the end we opted to remodel and add-on a mere 35 square feet in the form of a new shower. One key to transforming the house was in the removal of the large, poorly built, load-bearing stone fireplace that dominated and bisected the main living spaces. Once the fireplace was demolished and the roof re-supported, the opening for the chimney became a perfect opportunity for a large skylight that now fills the once-trapped living spaces with daylight. Once the main living room was freed from the constraints of the bulky fireplace, it was possible to use some of that floor area to enlarge the master bathroom and closet.

Applying the same approach as we had in the living room, we removed the dividing wall between the closet and bathroom to create an open and light filled space for dressing and bathing. Though the original seldom-used “front door” was on the south side of the living room, access to that entrance was incompatible with the natural sloped terrain and vehicular access to the site. Responding to the natural flow toward the house on its hilltop site, we chose to keep the side entry as the primary entry and create a dramatic concrete and beach-pebble parking plaza between the new carport and the entry. The extension of the closet into what had been the living room created a focal wall for a large painting at the entry that helps turn the visitor’s gaze toward the stunning view of the city lights across the living spaces, exterior deck and long horizontal cantilevered concrete bench. The creation of several small courtyards and patios throughout the house give a feeling of connection to the exterior while providing shelter and privacy. The area that had once been an awkward circular dirt driveway adjacent to the study and guest room, became a serene courtyard with a fountain, small square of grass, a single tree, and a horizontal slot opening that perfectly frames the city skyline – a favorite yoga and meditation spot for the owner’s brother when he visits.

The inclusion of a tiny courtyard around the 35 square foot glass and tile shower addition on the east side of the house allows the bather to feel as if he or she is outside but still out of view. Also instrumental in creating the new spa-like feel for the house was the decision to remove the original kidney-shaped pool that was in need of repair and much too close to the house for comfortable outdoor gathering. A new blue glass tiled and terrazzo-like plastered pool provides a dramatic and refreshing focus for the interior spaces. The pool, decks and small, raised grass bed provide an ideal area for entertaining with a view of the Catalina Mountains to the northeast. A pair of “floating” concrete bridges links the main deck to a master bedroom deck and linear outdoor fireplace.

House On The Corner by Eastern Design Office

An unique house design from Eastern Design Office answered the challanges from the availability of the site. This corner house is located in Youkaichi City in Shiga Prefecture, Japan with its attractive building shape, thin triangular building. When the site availability is not giving advantage for built normal and big house, Eastern Design Office was provoked to design house which is totaly different, very creative.

The site is placed on the two streets meet with an acute angel which is not suitable for building house. No body want to buy this location because of its shape, neither with the public sector to change it into city park. But Eastern Design Office take this as advantage to create attractive boarding house.

This corner house consist of four floors with total height of 13 meters and each floor has complete facilities such as bedroom, bathroom and also kitchen. This corner house has total seven rooms with 2 unit in each floor except 4th floor.

House on the corner by Eastern Design Office give us inspiration to be creative when faced unbenefit condition. By think out of the box, we can design wonderful and amazing house.

Australian Beach House – Curl Curl by CplusC Architects

Located in the Northern Beaches of Sydney, CplusC Architects have designed a beach house project namely Curl Curl beach house, taken from beach name, Curl Curl, New South Wales, Australia. Curl Curl beach house has stunning result by exploiting the structural and aesthetic benefits of wooden material, which is common used in beach house.

This Australian beach house was a project combination among materials, time and cost-effectiveness. Overview of a particular project consist of two bedroom with built in robes, bathroom/laundry room, open dining room, kitchen, lounge and a bridges.

The building envelope was influenced by sharing driveway, a service easement and a compact site and ease the architects to maximize internal floor area as good as external amenity. Natural ventilation in all direction of this Australian beach house were provided to respond to climate change through year. Another smart way which taken by the architects were providing integral fish ponds and plant beach vegetation that cool the summer breeze.

The public space in the East is separated by a central structural zone from the private space in the west side. The integration corridors that link the public and private spaces was constructed using wood studwork and clad with Spruce veneer. This connenction also accomodates the service and storage requirments of this Australian beach house.

The longitudinal partition of the beach house was reflected with the metal clad butterfly roof as a rainwater collector, which is stored in the basement for the entire system of the bladder.

From the outside, walls framed with Western Red Cedar shiplap boards are colored in black and lined vertically aligned. This creates a bold, modest aesthetic which contrasts with the clear oiled Western Red Cedar doors and windows, used specifically in this application due to its light weight and durability.

The essential elements of the interior was clean sinuous skylights along the entire length of the wall of the building and outside light. The shadow cast from the exposed LVL beams provide rhythm and interest.

No exception in the architectural field, nature always inspire architects to create wonderful house in sinergy with surrounding conditions. For the example, Lake Huron in Ontario, Canada already inspired MOS Architects to designed The Floating House.

The Floating House by MOS Architects is a wood building which sited on floaters in the center of the Lake Huron. The used of wood material is proposed for the house easily float on the lake, because of its light weight. The MOS Architects had calculated detail the effect of the season which is directly effect to the level of water in the Lake Huron. A simple looks architecture but needs accurate calculation especially for the floater construction.

Lake Huron in Ontario, Canada offers great panoramic views. The natural stones which present there are valuable assets for this floating house. MOS Architects utilized this assets to give full support for its floating house design. A deck was connecting this floating house to the natural stones and give space to the people enjoy surounding views. This connection also has another function to flexibility hold the floating house.

The interior concept of this floating house were not complicated. MOS Architects made simple partition to create rooms space of this house. The private spaces were placed in the second floor, where we can enjoy the Lake Huron from every direction. The floor used wood material with natural color and texture. Floating House Interior dominated by white color and natural color of wood which could give clean atmosphere inside the house.

This house is tapped on available natural resources. Four levels make up the building, each catering to the family’s various social and entertainment needs while also accommodating each member’s individual need for solitude.

Achieving space maximization and privacy were also factored into this design, in view of the house’s close proximity to neighboring units. As a result, the internal spaces face inward into a multi-functional courtyard which acts as circulation pivot, light well and ventilation exhaust, while also serving as a visual focal point. Dense foliage also provides a natural means for additional privacy.

The building’s slimmer east and west facades are a contrast to the wide-open north and south ones. This regulates natural lighting and wind ventilation for efficient thermal circulation. A pitched roof, with its series of repeating slopes, also generates additional skylight openings. And let’s also not forget that this is first and foremost a home for an active couple and their kids. For this, a lap pool and training room ensure that their fitness needs are taken care of.
