The Floating House by MOS Architects is a wood building which sited on floaters in the center of the Lake Huron. The used of wood material is proposed for the house easily float on the lake, because of its light weight. The MOS Architects had calculated detail the effect of the season which is directly effect to the level of water in the Lake Huron. A simple looks architecture but needs accurate calculation especially for the floater construction.

Lake Huron in Ontario, Canada offers great panoramic views. The natural stones which present there are valuable assets for this floating house. MOS Architects utilized this assets to give full support for its floating house design. A deck was connecting this floating house to the natural stones and give space to the people enjoy surounding views. This connection also has another function to flexibility hold the floating house.

The interior concept of this floating house were not complicated. MOS Architects made simple partition to create rooms space of this house. The private spaces were placed in the second floor, where we can enjoy the Lake Huron from every direction. The floor used wood material with natural color and texture. Floating House Interior dominated by white color and natural color of wood which could give clean atmosphere inside the house.

Small House Design by Secrest Architecture

The Description from The Architects:
The Silvertree residence is a study in how a small, dated, closed in and inwardly focused residence can be revived into an inspiring small house design that interacts with the outdoors. The wonderful climate of the Sonoran desert, and the opportunity for indoor-outdoor living, was ignored in the previous floor plan of this vaguely Mediterranean 1970s home. A nicely scaled rear terrace with great desert, mountain and partial city views was nearly inaccessible in the floor plan of the existing house. The user had to either go through the existing garage or through the master bedroom to access the rear patio. A new multi-functional space, and a remodeled kitchen and dining room, all revolve around a new three-sided fireplace. The fireplace is at the nucleus of the space and acts as a focal point while separating the spaces. The fireplace is positioned to open to all of the living spaces as well as the exterior patio. These new spaces allow the rest of the existing house to be connected with the exterior. The garage was relocated, creating better access in and out of the garage and allowing the rest of the rear of the house to open to the exterior. The new location buffers the living spaces from the roadway. The garage is covered with integral color plaster contrasting but complementing the existing painted stucco house and site walls. Storage is concealed behind birch panels allowing the garage to be minimal and uncluttered. The new garage acts as a showplace for the owners beloved restored 1970 Citroen DS. A pantry was added between living areas and the new garage creating a transitional space and extra storage for the new kitchen. The pantry is clad in birch panels with concealed pullout pantry doors.
The new living spaces open the house to the outdoors while maintaining privacy in its suburban setting. Fenestration was positioned to provide controlled views and light while screening neighboring houses. A clerestory window opens to the east allowing views of the tops of the Catalina Mountains. Mullion less butt-jointed glazing was used on the north facade to strengthen the connectivity with the outdoors and provide unfettered views. A large steel beam spans across the space supporting the roof making the roof appear to float over the mullion-less glass below. Large retractable screens concealed in the ceiling provide privacy and solar control when needed. The existing patio porch framing was saved and covered with birch panel plywood to unite the interior and exterior. The framing is supported by steel wide-flange beams and concrete columns echoing the interior language. The new small house design allows the exterior patio to become an extension of the interior spaces encouraging indoor-outdoor living. Integral color concrete floors below, and birch soffits above, extend to the exterior breaking the conventional opaque boundary, blurring the line between interior and exterior. A large custom sliding door can be opened to strengthen the connectivity with the exterior spaces. The space now becomes an observatory in which one can experience the ever changing environment of the desert; the daily and annual changes of light; the blooming Palo Verdes in spring; and the spectacular lightning shows during the monsoons.

Sustainable House in Singapore

The present of water pond in the center of this sustainable house make the atmosphere cooler. The water park could be enjoyed from the terrace when the member of the family sit together and relax there.

Photovoltaic cells and solar water heaters are employed together with design for passive cooling and cross ventilation to reduce energy usage. Irrigation tanks and roof gardens collect and recycle rainwater; and the use of materials such as recycled teak and artificial timber adds warmth without compromising the finite resources of our environment.

The House is laid out around a central water court that forms the focal point of the project. Lushly planted roof gardens surround this and add to the effect that nature is evident in every part of the house.

Although the house is high tech, using state of the art EIB systems, photovoltaic cells, security systems, these are integrated discreetly and work with the natural environment of the house rather than against it.

This integration of technology and nature deserves special mention in a compelling design that could realistically become the model for sustainable living.

This project is actually house design renovation project to replace a small older style single level house and had to be skilfully designed to adhere to local approving authority’s view sharing policy and ensure minimal view loss to the neighbours behind.

Mosma House Design – Corben Architects

The house design is concealed behind a timber battened garage door and entry gate to the street but then reveals itself as one enters the site and moves through the landscaped garden from the front gate to the front door. Only glimpses of the panoramic water view that lies beyond are revealed along this journey.

It is only upon entering the house and moving into the large open plan Living/Dining/Kitchen that the full impact of the stunning view is felt. The substantial living space with its large sliding windows and high ceilings flows out and becomes one with the outside encouraging the indoor/outdoor lifestyle.

The main entry, two living areas and guest wing are located on the middle level with three bedrooms on the upper level, the main one designed as a luxury suite. The lower level incorporates a large rumpus / media room and store areas.

The building is a simple rectilinear form of concrete and masonry construction, carefully layered with timber battening and sandstone cladding to present a modern home with a focus on natural materials and clear design principles.

The interior finishes incorporate American Oak timber floors to the living areas, Grey Limestone honed stone floors to the circulation areas, Walnut veneered joinery, white polyurethane cupboards, Quartz kitchen benchtops and Marble slabs in the bathrooms to create a contemporary, sophisticated interior with a warm inviting feel.

Energy saving options were adopted including an operable skylight over the central core allowing natural light and ventilation, timber slated screens provide sun control, concrete floors and roof to provide thermal mass and Energy Efficient glazing to the external windows and doors. The house design also consists of a rainwater harvesting system comprising of 30,000L rainwater tank which is used for garden irrigation and flushing of toilets.

The finished house design is a fine example of an understated but luxurious house that takes maximum advantage of a difficult site.

A concrete wall up to twenty-four feet high organizes the site and the house: the garage, entry and service spaces are on the street side of the wall, while providing privacy for the main living space which is a curtain wall-enclosed pavilion. The wall is also the organizing element for the circulation including the stairs with cantilevered steel treads. Supported on steel frames and triangular steel trusses, the roof swoops over the concrete wall capping the pavilion. Eight by sixteen foot sections of the curtain wall pivot for ventilation. The stair has demountable guardrails which are normally in place but were removed for the photographs.

The master bedroom is in a loft space above the kitchen, while a family room, media room, children’s bedrooms and bathrooms occupy the daylight basement level. There is additional living space above the garage accessible via stair or future elevator.

The garage nestled in the back of the house. The Architects wanted to hide the door and decided to clad the whole garage in a natural zinc finish that weathers to a subtle Grey patina. The garage door is concealed and flushed to the zinc cladding, creating a wall of cassette cladded zinc panels. The concept of not visually exposing the doors to the outside was deliberate as I wanted to emphasize the simplicity of the forms and quieten the whole structure. The architectural forms were conceived as large blocks of carved rock. windows and entrances as the carved openings.

There are numerous landscaped elements, such as the textured water wall along the steps towards the front entry, a shallow reflective pond with Gold fish and turtles, segmented raised platforms with each platform holding a different form of plant-life, and with the middle platform holding sand with a 3mx.6m old solid wood pier beam that was recycled from the docklands piers. this quietly sits on the sand as a representation of natures deterioration over time. The letterbox in itself is a sculpture and was thought of as sculptural entry lantern, the pattern was derived from vein structure of a leaf. the sculpture was created by Lump studio a renowned sculpture studio in Melbourne who have completed a number of public installations around Melbourne.

The house from the outside feels quite defensive but as soon as you enter the space it opens up and you have an internal courtyard with a lap pool and a line a bamboo running down the full length of the north boundary. The courtyard is surrounded by the living spaces and therefore you are able to enjoy the views to the courtyard no matter which room you are in. There is fireplace in one of the out rooms which is disconnected from the main building. This fireplace has a glass backing and can be viewed from the courtyard and from any other living space on the ground floor. Visual connection from all rooms but sound separation was important to create a sense of peace.

The interior finishes are quite warm and natural. The timber floor is a French smoked Oak wide board in a lime-wash finish, the grains a lime-wash and emphasized this creates texture, pattern and depth. So one side of the spine is finished in the wood and the other is finished in a Portuguese limestone. The split in finishes emphasize the spine but also reflective the different uses in the space. For instances the limestone falls in the higher traffic areas such as the kitchen, dining, laundry, powder room, corridor and study; Whereas the smoke Oak falls in the lower traffic areas, such as the lounge and family fireplace room.

The House is fully equipped with all modern appliances and technology. I purposely highlighted technology in reflective metal finishes such as polished chrome and glass to create a stark contrast between nature and man. The switches are finished in polished chrome with LED blue lights, this creates highlights and sparkle. Appliances are in metal and glass, window frames are in natural aluminum.

The house is also very energy conscious, all windows have Thermal break frames and are double glazed sealed. the floor is insulated underneath with reflective corrugated insulation paper, the house is fully insulated and is solar heated. The floor is low voltage electrically heated which maintains a steady consistent heat throughout the winter. Water tank is installed under the house and is connected to the garden, toilets and washing machine.

This dramatic renovation centers around a spacious internal courtyard defined by natural rock face and lush vegetation. The living areas also have the added benefit of glazing on the north façade which opens up the house to the view. The master suite pavilion, perched on the highest portion of the rock face, has been designed as a sanctuary for the parents, whilst maintaining a bird’s eye view over the living areas.

Today post is about modern home design idea which is located in Highland Park, Texas, USA. This home design use steel material for decorating the exterior part. Different with the other home design which use steel as its support. That is Bernbaum Magadini Architects, which has home design idea like this. All frame in this house is sparkling when the light hit the stainless steel frame. In line with the concept, the furniture used in this house design is also dominated by steel material. The use of stainless steel has important aim to eliminate future maintenance needs.

Actually this project only add a swimming pool and a cabana into the existing minimalist house. But during the project execution, the program expanded to include air-conditioned space and a bedroom for overnight guests. The decision to add the bedroom occurred after the original design had been framed, sheathed and dried-in. The additional programming presented a challenge of where to locate this additional square footage. Due to the location of the now constructed pool and severe setbacks and adjacency restrictions, a second floor was added with an exterior spiral stair designed to provide access and to minimize the visual disruption to the exterior patio associated with the pool.
