The house is designed for comfortable everyday life with the focus on sustanability. While its exterior is designed to be simple using a variety of low maintenance materials. The interior arranged around a large open space, which includes a kitchen, dining room and living room. A loft space which makes the first floor serves as a transition between the public and private space of this house. The living room opens to a covered patio, creating a large space for outdoor activities and blurring the boundary between the two. Windows are carefully positioned to fill the house with natural light with an abundant number and make a strong connection with the landscape.

Casa D, Italian Minimalist House

The used of large glass windows in this minimalist house is quite dominant. Every space has one large glass window, give effect looks like no barrier between interior and exterior part. This quite attractive way, when the architects also make medium size swimming pool right in front of this house terrace. When we see from front side, this house looks like floating on a swimming pool. An idea for creating fresh nuance into a house.

Let’s back to the interior design, Casa D has simple arrangement. Using soft and bright color for the wall and ceiling, the interior looks very clean and wider. Supported by minimalist furniture with similar color, the architects make interior of this house very wonderful. For the floor, Damilano Studio Architects use high quality ceramics tile and processing wood. It’s look that the architects want to perform natural texture inside this house.

For the exterior side, like what I’ve mentioned before, Casa D has medium size swimming pool. This pool is directly connected with the terrace of this house. This part has two function, as a terrace for the house and deck for the swimming pool. Nice integration by Damilano Studi Architects.

Overall Casa D is new concept offered by Damilano Studio Architects. Good integration between interior and exterior make this minimalist house beautiful. The present of medium size swimming pool also increase the attractive point of this house. The architects has make a good combination between modern minimalist style and natural nuance into Casa D.

Winnett house was dominated by Grey color, almost in every part of this house. Only for bathroom we can find white color. This small house design offers sustainability features, such as:

With this collaboration, Altius Architecture can present compact small house with modern style. Very beautiful with harmony between interior and exterior part.

360 Winnett House also decorated by small garden in the front courtyard. To maximize the combination between house and the garden itself, the owner choose small plant. Interior and exterior lighting also have effect to increase attractive point of this house design. In the night we can see that this house is glowing and looks more beautiful. This design is very inspiring for small family with one or two children.

Small House Design by Secrest Architecture

The Description from The Architects:
The Silvertree residence is a study in how a small, dated, closed in and inwardly focused residence can be revived into an inspiring small house design that interacts with the outdoors. The wonderful climate of the Sonoran desert, and the opportunity for indoor-outdoor living, was ignored in the previous floor plan of this vaguely Mediterranean 1970s home. A nicely scaled rear terrace with great desert, mountain and partial city views was nearly inaccessible in the floor plan of the existing house. The user had to either go through the existing garage or through the master bedroom to access the rear patio. A new multi-functional space, and a remodeled kitchen and dining room, all revolve around a new three-sided fireplace. The fireplace is at the nucleus of the space and acts as a focal point while separating the spaces. The fireplace is positioned to open to all of the living spaces as well as the exterior patio. These new spaces allow the rest of the existing house to be connected with the exterior. The garage was relocated, creating better access in and out of the garage and allowing the rest of the rear of the house to open to the exterior. The new location buffers the living spaces from the roadway. The garage is covered with integral color plaster contrasting but complementing the existing painted stucco house and site walls. Storage is concealed behind birch panels allowing the garage to be minimal and uncluttered. The new garage acts as a showplace for the owners beloved restored 1970 Citroen DS. A pantry was added between living areas and the new garage creating a transitional space and extra storage for the new kitchen. The pantry is clad in birch panels with concealed pullout pantry doors.
The new living spaces open the house to the outdoors while maintaining privacy in its suburban setting. Fenestration was positioned to provide controlled views and light while screening neighboring houses. A clerestory window opens to the east allowing views of the tops of the Catalina Mountains. Mullion less butt-jointed glazing was used on the north facade to strengthen the connectivity with the outdoors and provide unfettered views. A large steel beam spans across the space supporting the roof making the roof appear to float over the mullion-less glass below. Large retractable screens concealed in the ceiling provide privacy and solar control when needed. The existing patio porch framing was saved and covered with birch panel plywood to unite the interior and exterior. The framing is supported by steel wide-flange beams and concrete columns echoing the interior language. The new small house design allows the exterior patio to become an extension of the interior spaces encouraging indoor-outdoor living. Integral color concrete floors below, and birch soffits above, extend to the exterior breaking the conventional opaque boundary, blurring the line between interior and exterior. A large custom sliding door can be opened to strengthen the connectivity with the exterior spaces. The space now becomes an observatory in which one can experience the ever changing environment of the desert; the daily and annual changes of light; the blooming Palo Verdes in spring; and the spectacular lightning shows during the monsoons.

Salvado Street Beach House

Bates Smart Architects’s Description:
The design draws inspiration from modernist ideals of living which are tempered by a critical regionalist response to climate and place. Minimal lines and planar forms reference its modernist inspiration whilst materiality and detailing draw from a local palette of materials.

The planning concept is based on a courtyard typology featuring a pond, around which the private spaces and the public entertainment spaces are organized. This duality is emphasized architecturally by separate treatments of the private and public spaces: the public spaces are open plan, outward-oriented and unenclosed spaces gathered under a floating Miesian roof whilst the private spaces are inwardly focused and enclosed within thick masonry walls which create a sense of privacy and retreat.

The Salvado Street Residence, drawing simultaneously on the spatial qualities of the International Style and the regional context of coastal Western Australia, reveals a unique take of contemporary Australian Architecture.

Mark Tracy’s Description:
The intent of this design was to create a modern, art-gallery-style space to entertain hip, young guests and party goers. The 11-foot custom-designed aluminum front door opens to striped Italian floor tile, a three-story elevator tower surrounded with custom art, and a floating staircase trimmed with stainless steel. A 14-foot wide fireplace is the primary feature of the kitchen and living space, accompanied by Scavolini cabinets and metallic silver hardwood floors. Blue LED lighting glows around the second tier ceiling which extends from the kitchen and down the media wall and fireplace; it also accents the ceiling of the master bath.

The residence is located in The Ridges, an upscale custom home community to the west of Las Vegas nearing Red Rock Canyon.

Japanese House by Takeshi Hosaka Architects

Inside Out Japanese House has an irregular quadrangle shape in accordance with the irregularly-shaped quadrangular site. The roof and wall sides has been designed to have more open space, through which light, wind or rain could enter into the building. This technique allows us to plant some flower on the ground under the roof opening which allows rain to enter in. The boxes for bedroom and for bathroom are put in the outer volume; and a living room is located above the bedroom box and a deck above the bathroom box.

Inside the volume, there is a space in which you would feel yourself being outside: Light, wind or rain could enter in, so that your way of living depends on the weather; but in this Japanese house, you would always positively seek to find another images of life. Areas on the floor on which rain falls vary according to the wind direction, so you would seek to find the area where you don’t get wet. As you live longer, you would find out, from your experiences, various things about the relation between the extent to which rain enters in on the one hand, and the location of objects, furniture and yourself on the other. And, there is no air-conditioner in this Japanese house. During intermediate seasons or summer, both humans and cats live in natural draft, or, in the other words, they live in the air environment which is almost same as the outside. On windy or chilly days, you could stay in the indoor boxes or the living room with glass sliding doors closed. Figures and other many items which had been collected are located not only indoors, but many of which are also put on the outdoor shelves to the extent that it is possible. Cats walk on the thin line on which rain doesn’t fall and find places in the sun to take a nap. The couple stay in the living room upstairs with glass doors open, sometimes even on rainy days; they often live a life in which they feel themselves being outside even while being inside.

The Description from The Architects:
The 12,300-square foot house, completed in 2008, is a complex composition, reminiscent of the canvases of Georges Braque, in which geometric forms appear and disappear in a constant dance of illusion and materiality. The house comprises a series of distinct, yet interlocking rectilinear volumes conjoined by a transparent longitudinal axis. Positive volumes are balanced atop negative creating a heightened tension and intrigue. A glass-skinned throughway connects and distinguishes the two dominant volumes, or towers, capturing light and adding to the sense of interior capaciousness. Exterior glass, limestone, stucco and mahogany outline, augment and anchor what otherwise might be a cacophony of disparate forms.

Whether allegro, andante or largo, the varied rhythms of the internal structure are adroitly composed. Denizens move with leisure or efficiency, depending on need and mood. Interior spaces are carefully orchestrated to conceal and reveal dramatic views to the water. Surprise and delight are amplified by skillful interior and exterior framing. In the same way, the arrangement of program and use moves inhabitants through a logical gradient from public to private space, from activity to slumber, from conviviality to introspection. At either end of the longitudinal axis that connects the two domestic partitions, separate stairways enhance circulation and provide discrete access to the three-storied parapets.

The gracious interior is highlighted by the use of Mahogany, Minnesota Limestone, and plaster finishes. Afternoon sun is mitigated by aluminum louvers and astute structural arrangement. The bulthaup kitchen is enhanced by a sliding window wall which opens to an exterior courtyard, further collapsing the distinction between exterior and interior space, and thereby underscoring the sense of spontaneous yet calculated arrangement.

Description from the architects:
Having bought the existing house for its rear north facing garden, the owner wanted a series of social living spaces with a resort feel, to be enjoyed with family and friends. The new design simplifies the original plan through the insertion of a high entry gallery and relocates living areas to the rear (north) across both floor levels. Highlight louvered windows surrounding the gallery gently illuminate the owners’ art collection with southerly light and encourage natural ventilation so that the entire house can “breathe”.

At first floor level (the children`s domain) a large cantilevered deck overhangs the alfresco area and is connected to the pool via an external spiral stair. Extensive operable glazing to the northern facade and the continuous flow of timber, concrete, stone and marble further strengthen the focus toward the garden and pool and dissolve boundaries between building and landscape.

The resulting house is a place rich in possibilities and joy, enveloping its inhabitants in a sunny, social sanctuary which embraces the surroundings and thrives in the Australian climate.
