In addition to entertaining, the owners, who enjoy gardening and horseback riding, required an area to clean up after days spent outdoors. It was also their experience of entry and threshold, both in the daily utilitarian sense and in a more occasional formal sense, which needed to be clarified.

This chalanges is catched by the architect quite well. They designed a purposeful annexing of different elements that respect to the existing farmhouse. The junctures between old and new have been carefully articulated, giving each part of the addition its own distinctive identity. Entertaining, living, and dining occur in a pavilion enclosed in glass, structured with steel, and focused on a hearth created with stone from the surrounding site. A strong horizontality is developed by setting the finished floor flush with grade, encircling the space with a continuous steel beam and floating the roof above a glass clerestory. The horizontal transparency of this pavilion is juxtaposed against the vertical solidity of the white clapboard pavilion which houses a mudroom and bathroom. Being within each pavilion becomes an experience of contrast: solid versus void.

Home Remodeling – Lookout House

Project description from the Architects:
The original pyramid form of the house, which is centered on an open-plan double-height living space surrounding an indoor pool, was lightened and simplified with a contemporary material palette (including bamboo, blue stone, and glass tile) and a new lighting program. A glass bridge—an “architectural synapse” that clearly differentiates old from new—connects the main house to the master suite. Like the original structure, the new suite is a large volume enclosing a smaller one—in this case, a freestanding cube, finished in claro walnut, that divides the sleeping and bath areas.

This renovation project aim to create a space that would eliminate the earlier rather chaotic group of rooms and open it out generously to the rear in order to benefit from the sunset and the absence of noise from the street.

The back end was completely reconfigured: the extensions dating from the 1940’s were demolished to retrieve an alignment with the adjoining houses. Slightly proud of the adjoining houses, a new timber framed front with large windows gives the contemporary touch sought by the clients. The use of horizontal timber cladding is a discreet nod to the walnut and tobacco drying sheds typical of this area of south Isère.

On the ground floor the living space is completely open. The kitchen is open to the double-height volume and extends all the way along the front of the house. The central island houses the washing area and serves as a bar while the cooking area is extended by deeper storage cabinets incorporating the laundry area.

Upstairs a mezzanine overlooking the central atrium is the link to the sleeping area. The original parquet floor has been preserved here. The owners have deliberately opted for only one spacious bathroom which is directly accessible to the master bedroom from the dressing room and to the guest bedroom from the landing. As for the attic, this has been insulated and work will be continued on it at a later date.

The existing house which was originally an 80′s style multi-tenancy building in Sydney, Australia, become starting point of the new design. But this renovation project is rather extreme, only the external walls were retained to comply with the approved council envelope. A completely new look for the house was designed, both inside and out. Dramatic views of the harbor and the site’s natural amenities were maximized.

Because the other existing houses in the area sit closer to the street, the current zoning allowed this new design to be built in the front portion of the site. This allowed the architecture to have a dramatic, modern expression while mitigating the sloping front yard and maximizing the private rear yard. A new entrance, placed at an intermediate level, connects the renovated garage to the new living room with a new staircase. This new living room serves as the main viewing platform in the house. Frameless glass walls soar to 12 feet (3.7 m), wrapping the room on three sides, taking in the expansive views of the lush foliage in the neighborhood. A sleek, wood paneled ceiling hovers over the living room and the kitchen, connecting the spaces architecturally, while containing the crucial recessed lighting and ventilation ducts. The centrally located kitchen overlooks the main living room and is able to take advantage of the views to the south while maintaining a degree of privacy with a change in level.

Ascending to the main level, one is greeted with an expansive view to the rear yard. Glass doors slide away to seamlessly integrate the living spaces with outdoors. A generous patio space under the master bedroom provides a cool place to relax in the shade while taking in the California sun. The glass walls at both ends of the house are designed to be open to the gentle sea breezes, allowing the house to naturally ventilated most days of the year.

In order to preserve the views to the rear yard, an open steel staircase drips down from the upper level, inviting visitors to come upstairs. The cantilevered treads are clad in solid walnut, matched to the kitchen cabinets. The stair leads past the double height glass wall, allowing one to take in the view of the minimalist landscape in the rear courtyard. At the top, the master suite moves into the rear yard. This private retreat features a generous open plan with free-standing closets and private balcony.

The master bath is a minimalist expression in marble and glass. North-facing windows over the two-seater tub allow soothing light to enter, but are placed high enough to maintain privacy. An upper level media room spills out with a large balcony over the living room below. This balcony connects across the front of the house to two of the bedrooms. Deep overhangs shade these southern-facing windows, keeping the house cool.

This dramatic renovation centers around a spacious internal courtyard defined by natural rock face and lush vegetation. The living areas also have the added benefit of glazing on the north façade which opens up the house to the view. The master suite pavilion, perched on the highest portion of the rock face, has been designed as a sanctuary for the parents, whilst maintaining a bird’s eye view over the living areas.

Description from the architect:
The house is built between two narrow streets in the old part of the town of Lemesos, about 50m from one of the most popular stretches of sandy beach in Cyprus, and just down the road from the house I grew up. The site was previously occupied by an old carob mill that burnt down in a fire in 1989, leaving only the ruins of the stone walls.

The aim was to create a family home for me, my wife, and our four boys. For convenience and privacy, we wanted our place of work to be within the same plot but to have a separate entrance. The building had to fit into it’s surrounding environment of both traditional two storey stone and adobe single family dwellings, and some small old industrial buildings. At the same time it had to be modern, learning from traditional architecture but not copying it. Towards my aim of creating a coherent and safe environment for my family, I drew ideas from my own childhood memories of playing under huge plane trees in a house next to a mountain stream.

Last but not least, I wanted to apply ecological solutions to heating, cooling, lighting and water management.Most rooms in the house face the partly covered internal courtyard. This is a traditional way of building in Cyprus helping to keep the family together and safeguard the privacy of the occupants. A neoclassical proportional system that relates to human scale, is applied to both interior and exterior surfaces and can be seen in plan, elevation and section. (source:contemporist)

EvansHOUSE design is completed by Bittonidesignstudio, architectural firm which based in Los Angeles. This two level minimalist home is located in the modernist landmark community of Crestwood Hills. Great view of nearest hillside can be enjoyed from all part of EvansHOUSE. This small modernist community, which is part of greater Los Angeles has now become an architecturally controlled neighborhood that was originally planned by architects A. Quincy Jones and Whitney R. Smith.

This particular project is a remodel and addition to an existing 1957 Benton + Park home which is situated high above the city with views of the entire LA basin. The project was framed around taking something ‘modern’ and making it more contemporary. The existing spatial condition of the house was clearly divided between public(lower level) and private(upper level) as well as fixed within a completely horizontal orientation. The major move was to carve out a double high space above the kitchen in order to animate the section vertically and allow for more social interaction. While the idea of indoor/outdoor living is typically taken for granted in Southern California, the altitude of the site allowed for an atmospheric connection rather than a connection to the landscape. As the clouds change color and are in constant motion along the coastline, the house and its materials were thought of as a canvas to be manipulated by the sky.

Shirakuchi House is a masterpiece of Kazuya Matsuda under Nico Architect Associates. This minimalist house is located in Shirakuchi, Kurume, Fukuoka, Japan and done in 2005 – 2006. The concept of this house is the blending between rural elements and minimalist style which give graceful impression. Most of the material of this house is made from plywood and other lightweight materials. The purpose of these are to build anti-seismic house. We know that Japan is earthquake area.

House Description :
It is a small house for an aged couple to live with the daughter in the place enclosed by the rural scene in calm Chikugo plains. Because the family lived long in this place, the advantage and the disadvantage corresponding to the season of this place were able to be heard.

We were able to find two or more key words from among that. The key word was a reflection of the program of the traffic line, time, and the place for which the family hoped to the living, and the program of a new house was assumed to be a program that recalled the memory of an existing house that had built in this place. The building has square of 10.8M×10.8M plane shape. Each room is arranged by a similar position to the existing dwelling dismantled to the plan. This is because parents that there is a trouble on the hope for the continuance of a traffic line where it got used to a place and past memory to a new house, and the foot can come and go freely in each space.

There is a big sliding wooden door in the south, and scenery that feels rich nature extends there. And, because the cool wind cooled in a peripheral rice field passes the building, a comfortable environment that doesn’t need the air conditioner so much can be obtained though it becomes a sultry climate with the coming of summer around here

The facade in a simple delta roof appeared in a simple operation where the slanted roof with the building on the wall installed in a square plane and the diagonal and the axis went up to the northwest corner. The wall in this diagonal divides the plan of the first floor in two simultaneously with a constructional role as a public place and a private place.

The main concept for this white house is a room connected with the garden. This concept comes from the idea of openness and the elimination of divisions and barriers. The most important thing is the interior will extend into and become part of the garden, as would the garden will be part of the interior. Early vision in
the conceptual phase was one of the sitting room located between lush plants and trees with the garden wall as a wall of the room.

With time the garden will grow thicker and taller and contribute at an urban scale as well as providing an oasis for the owners. This home is very environmental friendly with good solar access and plenty of ventilation.
