This house design has some challanges that should be overcame by the architects. One of the challenge is ± 9.5 acres hilly land with irregular level pattern. After a long detail discussion with the client, the architects decided to bring this dwelling to the Villa House in the middle of the area. This concept make the master bedroom and living area can also be directly in contact with an open area.

Another interesting thing of this Villa House is the Dining area which is in the outside area. Kitchen, Mini Bar and Lounge Area also available in this area so as to create a comfortable outdoor area to congregate.

For the building itself, The architects make the concept of tall and strong building appear in this project, which is manifested by the hight of the roof of the building and also accompanied by the addition of the top of the grill so that it adds the luxury of this Villa House.

The location of this house design offer tranquility for people inside. Especially when after rainy day and fog an intense light reflects in the stilled mirror of the majestic Hudson River’s deep water.

A place where twilight are a thousand colors as the water breaks into a thousand reflections. A place where the air is clean and calm, and mild. One could say a place that is very close to heaven. In this impressive place, we establish a plane, a platform that underlines the landscape before us, seeking to enhance it.

A large long box house design is thus built, 122 feet long by 54 feet wide by 12 feet high, with sturdy concrete walls that accentuate its relationship to the land. The roof of this house design is flat, paved in stone, travertine, so that we may use it.

And to protect ourselves from the sun and rain, over the stone plane we raise a light roof 100 feet long by 40 feet wide by 9 feet tall, held by 10 cylindrical steel pillars that are arranged according to a 20 x 20 foot grid. This roof cantilevers 10 feet along all of its sides. And to make this space habitable, we put a glass box under the roof, an enclosure measuring 94 feet long by 25 feet wide. This glass box contains the back row of columns within it and leaves the front columns outside, in order to further accentuate its transparency.

This house design construction on the platform resembles a large table with ten legs. Three areas are created within it, divided by two white boxes that do not reach the ceiling, containing the stairs and service spaces. The central space is the living area, and the dining room has a large white table. On one side, closer to the swimming pool, is the kitchen, and on the other side, in the manner of a pensatorio, the area around the hearth.

And below, inside the cement box, the bedrooms and baths are housed. In its central vestibule, connecting the main entrance and the access to the garden, a gallery has been created where pieces of Arte Povera and other pieces of contemporary Italian art are displayed, in addition to other areas around the house. In all, once again, the cabin over the cave. The tectonic piece on top of the stereotomic piece.

Modern Villa Design – Villa K

The inner spaces are divided into four parts and, on the other hand, are connected in a spiral around the central pillar. The four roofs are connected with different angles one another. Sunlight coming through the slits between the roofs highlights the division of the inner spaces.

Located in rural Iowa, Lake Okoboji is a part of a glacial lake system surprisingly located amidst endless cornfields, 2.5 hours from the nearest metropolitan area. The house sits on a diminutive lot on the dense shoreline where old cottages and new McMansions sit tightly together. Our strategy resulted in a deceptively simple footprint that minimized the size of the house on the site while allowing for a series of spatial frames within the house that focus on the view while excluding the neighbors. This allowed for a sense of total privacy within the house itself. Additionally, the lake itself is ringed by numerous oak trees which form beautiful a canopy around the lake, separating it from the corn fields.

Volumetrically simple from the exterior, opaque and slatted vertical Ipe clads a stacked set of spatial tubes (the primary living spaces) that are open to the lake and woods views, but visually closed to neighbors on the sides. We formed the house’s spatial tubes around view axes running through the site, perceptually linking the lake through the forest to the fields beyond. These view-framing tubes are literal voids in the mass of the house bounded at their ends only by glass. Light and air also enters these rooms through operable windows set behind the slatted Ipe cladding. Dense service spaces (“program solids”) fill the remaining volume.

The first level is dominated by continuous subtly amorphous space that opens to the exterior in with lake views in several directions. This space bounds the primary living spaces while suggesting connections and extensions to the surrounding landscape, lake and sky.

In contrast to the spatial tubes of the public areas, the smaller private spaces (bedrooms and bathrooms) are treated with a pronounced sense of interiority. As spaces become increasingly intimate, the intensity of color increases as well. All interior surfaces in these rooms are subsumed by intense color to the extent that each feels like a zone of pure color.Here color becomes equivalent to the Lake that dominates the spatial tubes, providing and autonomous interiority in contrast to the site-oriented “tubes”. Color becomes an important tool of space making, an additional layer that can reinforce or contradict the other components of spatial geometry, intensifying the experience or adding complexity.

The creative ingenuity behind the year and a half transformation of the Parks House is made all the more intriguing because Parks, the owner, had no formal architectural/design education. Yet he designed and spearheaded the project himself — an architectural metamorphosis through which Parks himself found a new career and a passion for creating ground-breaking modern design.

After an architect presented us with a set of plans (no similarities to Parks’) that were over three times our budget, I decided to explore the possibility of using my love of architecture and my creative, budgeting and project management skills from TV and film producing to try and do it myself,” Parks said. “It all came together in a very LA story. While getting my haircut, a stylist told me that he had a contractor/business partner ‘who was the best.’ The contractor turned out to be his brother, but after meeting him I realized he was our man and I could do the project for under our limited budget.”

Parks faced countless challenges when he purchased the house: severe dry rot and termite damage to every area of the wood, post and beam-built house; windows that did not connect with their frames; a poor floor plan with little worthwhile usable space and only one proper bedroom; a kitchen where Parks actually put his foot through the rotted floor; poor ventilation with no insulation and an oddly shaped lot coupled with difficult hillside conditions. But Parks looked past the dwelling’s numerous issues and instead saw incredible, unrealized potential.

With a contractor on board and with the housing market going bust, Parks had no choice but to dive in. Never one to take the easy road, Parks immersed himself totally into the project and was hands-on from day one, tackling all the architecture, design, budgeting, permit and inspection approvals, as well as complex landscaping issues. In fact, many days Parks could be seen dangling 40ft. in the air staining wood — an undertaking befitting Parks — a man whose vision, drive and spirit of adventure led him to ascend the treacherous slopes of Mt. Everest in 2000. “With this house, the learning curve and the difficult lot were both steep to say the least,” Parks said, “the only way to accomplish this was to make it a full time job.”

The Parks House now stands as a testament to forward-thinking, sleek, open, airy and inviting modern architecture that accomplishes the rare feat of combining a minimalist aesthetic with both comfort and hip, understated luxury. With impeccable proportions and bold geometry, Parks’ design uses the strategic and artful interplay between horizontal and vertical volumes to define the home’s appearance — engaging and heightening the senses of those who visit.

“There is a story for every square inch of the house,” Parks said. One standout design-forward feature, that was perhaps the most challenging design and remodeling detail of the project, is a breath-taking wall of glass that looks out onto a striking canopy of trees. To achieve this, Parks turned a deaf ear to many who told him that he would not be able to find glass that was energy efficient, thermal, double glaze, and large enough for his design. Parks also thought outside of the box to create a dark, vertical, metal cladding element for the exterior by using sustainable metal standing seam roofing, usually seen on large commercial buildings, and cutting it into various widths to create a beautiful, cascading design.

Other distinguishing features include a stunning wood-trellised box-framed window; a portion of the house sheathed in exquisite, sustainably-harvested exterior wood cladding; and the extensive use of sustainable and eco-friendly building materials throughout. In addition, landscaping walls made of recycled concrete from old driveways; floor to ceiling glass reminiscent of its mid-century modern roots; and an outside waterfall created with small pieces of discarded slate add distinctive detailing to the house.

Perhaps one of the most inspiring aspects of this project is that the creation of the Parks House, borne from a love of architecture and design, has turned into a new career for Parks, who, mid-way through construction, began taking technical architecture courses at night at UCLA. Parks said, “I remodeled the house and the house remodeled me.

I heard a quote once: ‘There’s how we live and that is food, clothing and shelter. And then there is why we live… and that’s called art.’ The goal was to create a house in which we were surrounded, inside and out, by warm, modern architecture that is art, but could be lived in comfortably.”

The design is a modern interpretation of the Kiwi batch based upon the creation of simple building forms to articulate an uncluttered lifestyle. The design amalgamates three pavilion forms around an enclosed and sheltered courtyard with seamless access from internal living spaces.
Private pavilions at each end of the house contain master bedroom and guest accommodation. A central pavilion accommodating common living and entertaining spaces connects the private pavilions around the family social center.

The emphasis of the design is to merge both house and site to provide views to the surrounding mountain ranges, rural horizons and to capture both morning sunrise and late afternoon sun. Considered attention to detailing is inherent throughout, complimented by furniture and artwork that connects inside space with outdoor enclosures to create a private and relaxed retreat.

Closed to the outside; light and open on the inside. This elliptically shaped property is composed of an enclosed space around a patio. The inner facade is fully glazed. The house has a linear layout: the hallway behind the entrance opens out into one big space where the functions of cooking, eating, living and working occupy their own particular zones. The space then narrows again, into a corridor that leads to the main sleeping quarters. The basement with a sauna, the children rooms and sun room is linked with the floor above by an open well. Monk’s Shadow residence is located in Paradise Valley, Arizona. Designed by Kendle Design Collaborative, this house become the answer of pragmatic response to an challenging site. Why it’s challenging? Because this house should be built on a narrow lot with 60’ of vertical elevation combined with a restrictive Hillside Zoning Ordinance. It seems impossible to built on it. But with the creative design ideas from Kendle Design Collaborative, Monk’s Shadow become luxury house in dry and hilly location.

The house is divided into three main space;
1. Parents zone including master suite, primary family and entertainment functions
2. The teenager zone including bedrooms, game room, pool access and one of two garages
3. Guest zone including a bed/bath suite and small great room that doubles as the owner’s home office.
These zones are stair stepped up the narrow site such that each zone has commanding views of the mountain which embraces them, the valley floor and the distant mountain ranges.

The owner of this house want to make their house become no boundaries with the surrounding. They desire to wake up each morning and see the monk without leaving their bed. Many more decisions would be based on views to the Praying Monk including slot windows above the art gallery allowing the 6’-6” inhabitants to see the Monk as they traversed past their art collection, views to the Monk as they stretched out in the pool or flipped burgers at the BBQ just to name a few. They also wanted every guest to have the Monk be their last view before departing the property.

This relationship with the Monk, and more importantly the site specific, became invaluable in the design of the home. The Owners understood where the shadows of the surrounding mountain fell throughout the year allowing the best placement possible for the pool. They understood that even during the hottest months of the year that at some point during the evening the temperature of the air at the top of the mountain would drop and a cooling breeze would fall down the mountain across their site. They understood that the surrounding mountains blocked many of the lowest sun angles at the end of the day and provided the most amazing sunsets.

As a result the home is designed to breath – to funnel the natural air currents through the home allowing the home to be enjoyed without mechanical air conditioning throughout much of the year. The placement of the “secret garden” further adds to the cooling effect, cooling the air before it is drawn through the primary living areas of the home.

The “Secret Garden”. The home is approached via a somewhat formal car court, devoid of views into or through the home. This provides the owners of this largely glass house a great degree of privacy. Upon passage through an over sized frosted glass pivot door guests are greeted by a linear gallery space with a completely transparent facade facing the Secret Garden, a lush oasis in the desert made up of colorful desert appropriate plantings of a softer nature along with a judicious use of turf. The turf, kept to a minimum, acts as a soft extension of the interior floor area – a turf terrace so to speak. This turf and the water used to feed it, along with the other planting chosen for their ability to hold moisture, actively cool the breezes that are drawn across them before being drawn like a horizontal chimney through the home.

Like many of my projects the roof is celebrated and articulated to form a pavilion, sheltering the interior and exterior spaces below and providing those spaces the freedom to take on what ever shape their function dictates with out interruption from columns and supporting walls. The form of the roof is a direct response to the views, raising up to capture the view up the mountain and reaching out to carry the eye out to the Valley views to the north. The butterfly shape also acts to direct precious rain water to supplement the watering of the surrounding xeriscape landscaping.

The roof of the lowest level forms the deck of the main public/family level. This deck is divided in to a kitchen and dining side that bridges to the main living area deck. All materials are chosen to be in harmony with the natural surrounding. Hard scape, including the concrete pavers on the deck, resemble the finish and color of the natural desert floor. Copper accents weather to a natural patina complimenting the iron rich strata found in the surrounding rock formations. Integral colored hard troweled synthetic plaster is colored to compliment the indigenous creosote, Palo Verde, mesquite and ironwood found on site.

Sustainable features include low-e glazing throughout, zoned high efficiency climate control systems, ample daylighting reducing need for electric light, expanded cell foam insulation providing extraordinary r-values and reduced air infiltration and acoustic benefits, cross air ventilation reducing need for mechanical conditioning, mechanized window shading and deep overhangs to shade and protect openings, exposed concrete floors reducing floor coverings and adhesives, and xeriscape landscaping designed to assist with interior cooling.

The result is a home that unlike many of its more attention grabbing neighbors quietly rests within its natural setting, interwoven with nature, only revealing its most precious gifts to those living within and those fortunate enough to be their guests.
