Monk’s Shadow Residence in Paradise Valley, Arizona by Kendle Design Collaborative

Monk’s Shadow residence is located in Paradise Valley, Arizona. Designed by Kendle Design Collaborative, this house become the answer of pragmatic response to an challenging site. Why it’s challenging? Because this house should be built on a narrow lot with 60’ of vertical elevation combined with a restrictive Hillside Zoning Ordinance. It seems impossible to built on it. But with the creative design ideas from Kendle Design Collaborative, Monk’s Shadow become luxury house in dry and hilly location.

The house is divided into three main space;
1. Parents zone including master suite, primary family and entertainment functions
2. The teenager zone including bedrooms, game room, pool access and one of two garages
3. Guest zone including a bed/bath suite and small great room that doubles as the owner’s home office.
These zones are stair stepped up the narrow site such that each zone has commanding views of the mountain which embraces them, the valley floor and the distant mountain ranges.

The owner of this house want to make their house become no boundaries with the surrounding. They desire to wake up each morning and see the monk without leaving their bed. Many more decisions would be based on views to the Praying Monk including slot windows above the art gallery allowing the 6’-6” inhabitants to see the Monk as they traversed past their art collection, views to the Monk as they stretched out in the pool or flipped burgers at the BBQ just to name a few. They also wanted every guest to have the Monk be their last view before departing the property.

This relationship with the Monk, and more importantly the site specific, became invaluable in the design of the home. The Owners understood where the shadows of the surrounding mountain fell throughout the year allowing the best placement possible for the pool. They understood that even during the hottest months of the year that at some point during the evening the temperature of the air at the top of the mountain would drop and a cooling breeze would fall down the mountain across their site. They understood that the surrounding mountains blocked many of the lowest sun angles at the end of the day and provided the most amazing sunsets.

As a result the home is designed to breath – to funnel the natural air currents through the home allowing the home to be enjoyed without mechanical air conditioning throughout much of the year. The placement of the “secret garden” further adds to the cooling effect, cooling the air before it is drawn through the primary living areas of the home.

The “Secret Garden”. The home is approached via a somewhat formal car court, devoid of views into or through the home. This provides the owners of this largely glass house a great degree of privacy. Upon passage through an over sized frosted glass pivot door guests are greeted by a linear gallery space with a completely transparent facade facing the Secret Garden, a lush oasis in the desert made up of colorful desert appropriate plantings of a softer nature along with a judicious use of turf. The turf, kept to a minimum, acts as a soft extension of the interior floor area – a turf terrace so to speak. This turf and the water used to feed it, along with the other planting chosen for their ability to hold moisture, actively cool the breezes that are drawn across them before being drawn like a horizontal chimney through the home.

Like many of my projects the roof is celebrated and articulated to form a pavilion, sheltering the interior and exterior spaces below and providing those spaces the freedom to take on what ever shape their function dictates with out interruption from columns and supporting walls. The form of the roof is a direct response to the views, raising up to capture the view up the mountain and reaching out to carry the eye out to the Valley views to the north. The butterfly shape also acts to direct precious rain water to supplement the watering of the surrounding xeriscape landscaping.

The roof of the lowest level forms the deck of the main public/family level. This deck is divided in to a kitchen and dining side that bridges to the main living area deck. All materials are chosen to be in harmony with the natural surrounding. Hard scape, including the concrete pavers on the deck, resemble the finish and color of the natural desert floor. Copper accents weather to a natural patina complimenting the iron rich strata found in the surrounding rock formations. Integral colored hard troweled synthetic plaster is colored to compliment the indigenous creosote, Palo Verde, mesquite and ironwood found on site.

Sustainable features include low-e glazing throughout, zoned high efficiency climate control systems, ample daylighting reducing need for electric light, expanded cell foam insulation providing extraordinary r-values and reduced air infiltration and acoustic benefits, cross air ventilation reducing need for mechanical conditioning, mechanized window shading and deep overhangs to shade and protect openings, exposed concrete floors reducing floor coverings and adhesives, and xeriscape landscaping designed to assist with interior cooling.

The result is a home that unlike many of its more attention grabbing neighbors quietly rests within its natural setting, interwoven with nature, only revealing its most precious gifts to those living within and those fortunate enough to be their guests.

Take place on the top of Morumbi hill, Drucker Arquitetura present The Morumbi Residence. The concept of this building like an villa in high land. What interesting here is wonderful surrounding view, still natural with a lot of trees which make this building become comfortable. The architects use large window in every room to capture sunlight to use as heater in this villa and also to give access for the owner to enjoy surrounding view. Even though looks like an showroom but this villa also give more privacy so there is no reason to worry about it.

In front of this villa, a medium size swimming pool with different deep can be use for all family member. A terrace located not so far from this swimming pool and connected by wood floor. A safety material to prevent slip accident during move from swimming pool to villa. In the other side we can find green area which is dominated by palm trees. Japanese grass grow and cover the soil in the villa garden, like a green tapestry.

The architects choose minimalist style for this CS House, but you can see here that this house looks so luxury. Consists of three level, Pitagoras has success to combine spaces with different size. Like arranging box by box and make it unsymmetrical, become a strong point of CS house.

The Scholl Residence from Studio B Architects

The Scholl Residence is a redesign project which is done by Studio B Architects. With the view of snow mountain, this house become challenging for Studio B Architects. This house has a lot of problem to solve such as drainage, topography, a small footprint, and restrictive easements. The Scholl residence actually reflected a simple house design, there is no complicated shape embedded in this house.

The Scholl Residence consist of three level with main function on each level. The lower level is completely below grade and houses the formal gallery space, large wine cellar and provides two guest suites with an attached massage room. The entry level offers the client’s office, a guest bedroom, laundry/mudroom area and the garage. The upper level contains the living, dining, kitchen, master suite and opens to the balcony and private garden with access to a roof terrace via a cantilevered steel stair. A small dumbwaiter shuttles wine from cellar to rooftop.

Oakland Hill House in California by Kanner Architects

Oakland hill house, is located on a down-sloping site high above the San Fransisco bay, Oakland, California. The concept of this house is capturing the magnificent vistas spanning from the Bay Bright to the Golden Gate Bridge. Dominated by glass window, Kanner Architects wants to make this house decorated by wonderful surrounding views. The predominantly south-southwest orientation required deep overhangs to cut down glare and soften the light quality in the home.

Kanner Architects design this house with four bedrooms centered around placement of the master bedroom, fresh living room with huge glass window and kitchen on the leading edge of the home. The placement of glass carport and secondary bedrooms are in a second building higher up the slope. A glass bridge spans a bamboo garden and connects the structures.

We also served artistic wall texture from this house, very unique because we rarely find other house design which explore the exterior wall quite detail like Oakland Hill House.

New Concept of Library in Koh Samui Resort by Tirawan Songsawat

New concept of library already built in Koh Samui Resort, Thailand. He was Tirawan Songsawat who become intellectual architect behind this project. This library is located between old-growth trees on that resort and minimalist structure become the choice. The use of contrast color such as;white, red, black and grey become one of interesting point which fresh our eyes.

We called as a new concept of library because this library completed by restaurant, swimming pool, reading room, and luxurious rest room. At the exterior side, this library has beautiful garden and also wonderful view of surrounding beach. This library will give pleasure for the reader or book madness.

Tirawan Songsawat explained about the concept of this project; This library is built as an exotic smart concept. Semi-minimalist architecture is our solution as it provides a very simple architecture and interior which has a balance with surrounding nature. To complement with architecture style, a smart interactive between staff and guests is added up to ensure that the right combination of both facilities and staff will create a perfect blend of the project.

The strong point of this project is ‘The Library Building’ located by the beach named itself after the project’s title. The White building with high huge ceiling equipped with glass window pane all around will enrich purity, serenity and peace.

The Library Building consists of three box-style units adjoining together where the middle box is an open-air serving as a mini-café. The other two boxes are the huge library for not only books but also other entertainment media such as music CD, movie DVD. In addition, there will be a small corner for internet access with broadband connection. Guests will enjoy sipping a cup of coffee, writing e-mail, listening to music with sea views.

ISEAMI Villa Design from Robles Architects

Located in Playa Carate, Peninsula de Osa, Puntarenas, Costa Rica, Robles Architects has completed its project in designing a villa called ISEAMI house. Built on a hill which full of natural beach vegetation, this villa has wonderful view. When we open the door, beach line exist in front of the villa.

This villa is become the first stage of the ISEAMI institute (Institute of Sustainability, Ecology, Art, Mind and Investigation). The main purpose of this villa is become main area of this institute, so the student can use this villa for host of investigation, meditation, training, Yoga and enjoy the wonderful view of the coast in Costa Rica.

As an Architect Firm, Robles Architects seriously design this villa by analyzing 10 important elements as : site, climate, energy, water, materials, environment, atmosphere, cost, innovation with the use of passive strategies and the implemented processes. The analyzing result is quite useful for create a house in remote area without facing problem like electricity supply, water supply and also problem for surrounding environment itself. So the villa can complete the main concept as a very low maintenance house

This villa use a large glass window to adsorb as much as possible thermal energy from the sun. The other reason is to enjoy much the wonderful view from inside the villa. A swimming pool is provided for relax activity after busy from daily institute activity.
